In the past, deciding what to do with a person’s body after they died usually came down to two choices—cremation or burial in a coffin. In recent years, people have become more concerned about the environmental impact of these traditional practices. In America, burying the dead requires considerable resources. Over 1.5 million tons of concrete, almost 65,000 tons of steel, and 15 million liters of embalming fluid are used each year.

在过去，决定如何处理一个人死后的遗体通常总归有两种选择 ── 火化或埋葬在棺材里。近年来，人们愈来愈关心这些传统作法对环境的影响。在美国，埋葬死者需要消耗大量资源。每年使用超过一百五十万吨的混凝土、近六万五千吨的钢材，以及一千五百万公升的防腐液。
