By 1936, the promise of a delicious treat turned the focus of Halloween away from dangerous pranks. At that time, the most popular types of treats were homemade popcorn and doughnuts. During World War II, the practice of handing out treats on Halloween was put on hold because the supply of sugar was strictly limited. However, in the 1950s, television shows about Halloween made the practice more popular than ever.
