Hamsters are rodents that have become popular household pets. They are small and furry with short tails and pointy noses. There are about 20 different species of hamsters, but only a few of these are kept as pets. Only living for two or three years, hamsters have very poor vision, but they can sense movement around them. They communicate with high-pitched squeaks and body language. Hamsters are more active at night than during the day.
