Many cities and organizations have taken action against light pollution. The International Dark-Sky Association was founded in the United States in 1988. The nonprofit group works with communities around the world to preserve and appreciate the darkness of night. Entire cities such as Chicago have chosen to change their lighting fixtures in order to decrease energy use and improve public health. In Canada, bird-friendly laws regarding lighting have been passed, and many major cities turn off their lights during migration seasons.
