Alex and Sandra are tourists visiting the US. They are about to pay their bill at a restaurant.
A: America has a tipping culture, you know. It would be rude if we didn’t tip.
S: Oh, right. I’ve been in Japan for too long.
A: Do they not tip in Japan?
S: No, they don’t. Actually, if you try to tip, it is seen as rude. The worker will likely not accept it. It’s not part of their culture at all.
A: In America, it’s the opposite. Many different professions rely on tipping, such as taxi drivers and hairdressers.
