Just 10 kilometers off Taiwan’s northeastern coast lies a small island that can easily be seen from Toucheng in Yilan County. This island looks like a giant turtle rising from the sea, which is why it was given the name Turtle Island, or Guishan Island. One of Turtle Island’s claims to fame is its volcanic activity, which isn’t visible above the ocean’s surface. However, beneath the waves exists an active world of hot gas and boiling water. Sulfur pours from the seabed and creates sights and smells that can both amaze and upset visitors.
