The Lantern Festival is a celebration of peace, hope, and new beginnings. In the past, it was also thought of as a matchmaking opportunity where young people would take to the streets and interact with one another. The beginning of Chinese New Year always takes place with a new moon, so the nights are very dark. After 15 days of family visits, dinners, and rituals, people make a final celebration of lighting up the streets with fireworks and paper lanterns. This bright display welcomes the year ahead.
